Entertainment at The Gregory takes inspiration from the characters and stories of the channel country. Gregory North entertains at the North Gregory Hotel every evening with bush poetry and history of Waltzing Matilda and Winton. The Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival attracts some of Australia’s best film talent to Winton. The festival celebrates the Australian film industry and the people who dedicate their lives to film. In Winton you are on the set of Australian cinema history. Its rich history and picturesque landscape have appeared on feature films and Australian television alike. The Proposition, Mystery Road, and Texas Rising: The Lost Soldier are all feature movies that have been shot in the Winton area.
Winton is one of the oldest and most famous mining towns in Australia. Boulder opals are very unique and are mined from large ironstone boulders under the ground. They can only be found in the areas of Quilpie and of course, Winton. They are the second most valuable type of opal and have a layer of solid brown ironstone on the back of the stone.
